During 2012 Westfield introduced a waterless urinal installation program in order to achieve a 100% installation rate at Westfield London. This completed a process that began during the centre’s construction. On opening in 2008 the majority of urinals were waterless, which has reduced the need for potable water in the past five years.

As part of this initiative Westfield London trialled the new waterless replacement system, which would have the added benefits of minimising odours and blockages, and providing a more reliable service that is easier to maintain.

The introduction of the new waterless system has seen a reduction in leaks and blockages, thereby reducing potential impact on customer experience through a decreased need to close toilet blocks during trading hours, and other inconveniences. Blockages have also been reduced through the new system’s ability to prevent entry of foreign objects like chewing gum and toilet tissue.

In addition to the reduction in water use, the waterless urinals also require a lower level of energy use associated with flushing. The need for heavy-duty cleaning chemicals also diminished thanks to the new system.

Westfield in the United Kingdom has plans to roll out the same system at Westfield Derby.

This initiative builds on other water-saving measures the Group has implemented across its UK centres, including rainwater harvesting at Stratford City to supply the customer toilets: an initiative that has collected almost 1 million cubic metres of rainwater.
